Hallelujah! 참 반가운 신도여 열 두 번째 밤의 노래 그 어린 주 예수 종들의 캐롤 동물들의 캐롤 12일간의 크리스마스 오 베들레헴 작은 골 (17세기 프랑스 캐롤) 잘 자거라 귀여운 아가야 (존 루터) 기쁘다 구주 오셨네 말구유의 노래 (16세기 독일 캐롤) 아름답게 장식하세 아기와 성모 (멕시코 민요 편곡) 만백성 기뻐하여라 옛날 임금 다윗 성에 고요한 밤 거룩한 밤 호두까기 인형 헨델과 그레텔 할렐루야 레너드 번스타인: 크리스마스의 기쁨 몰몬 예배소 합창단, 리처드 P. 콘디 뉴욕 필하모닉, 레너드 번스타인 레오나드 번스타인은 생전에 카라얀과 더불어 유럽과 아메리카 대륙의 지휘자를 대변하는 양대산맥이었습니다. 물론 개별적인 곡이나 작곡가에 대한 해석측면에서 당대 최고의 연주를 보여준 지휘자들도 무수히 많습니다만 일반 대중과 매스미디어의 활용한 마케팅, 활발한 레코딩 유산을 고려하면 DG,베를린필의 카라얀과 콜롬비아(SONY),뉴욕필의 번스타인이 그 시대의 대표적 아이콘이 아니었나 싶습니다. 일반적으로는 카라얀의 뭔가 심각히 고뇌하는 외모에서 풍기는 샤프하면서도 지성적인 이미지와 함께 해석측면에서 다소 느리게 연주하면서도 풍만한 소리를 이끌어내는 작품 해석스타일이 카라얀으로 하여금 대중적으로 더 많은 사랑을 받고 더 높게 인지하게 되지 않았나 싶습니다. 물론 제 주관적인 판단입니다. 하지만 순수하게 음악적인 탈렌트만을 가지고 본다면 번스타인이 더 뛰어난 음악가가 아니었나 싶습니다. 오케스트라 지휘자로서의 해석은 호불호가 있을지라도 번스타인의 경우, 클래식 멘토로서 후세를 위한 교육에도 열정적이었고(EBS에서도 상영했던, 아마 전세계 많은 국가에서 당시 그의 강연 Young People''s Concerts를 상영했을 것입니다.) 또한 작곡가로서도 뛰어나 Cndide나 on the Town, West Side Story 등 우수한 작품도 많이 남겼습니다. 제 판단에는 그야말로 마지막 클래식 음악가가 아니었나 싶습니다. 과거의 음악가들은 연주와 작곡이 분리되지 않았던 그야말로 예술가였다고 볼 수 있습니다. 이는 세부 전공으로 분리되며 각종 학위로 밥그릇이 나눠지기 이전 세대, 예를 들면 과거 철학가들은 인문,과학,수학 모두에 능통했고, 사회학자들도 경제와 경영구분없이 전반에 대해 이해와 사고의 깊이가 지금의 학자들 보다 넓고도 깊었던 것 같습니다. 적어도 당시엔 내 전공이 아니라 그건 몰라라는 말은 하지 않았을 시대였을 것 같습니다. 그러한 통합적인 시각과 사고를 하는 세대의 끝부분에 있는  예술가중 한명이 바로 번스타인이 아닌가 싶습니다. 이 앨범, Joy of Christmas에는 앞서 소개한 차이코프스키의 호두까기 인형(60년 녹음)과 합창 캐롤들(56년,70년)의 연주를 모두 담고 있습니다. 즉 당시엔 LP시절이었지만 지금의 CD가 수록할 수 있는 시간에 비해 20여분 정도 짧았기에 최근에 Joy of Christmas라는 타이틀로 소니에서 묶어서 발매한 것입니다. 따라서 번스타인이 들려주는 다양한 버전의 크리스마스 시즌 음악을 즐길 수 있는 기획음반이라 할 수 있습니다. 작 곡 가 : Bernard de la Monnoye/Christmas Traditional/Engelbert Humperdinck 앙상블/관현악 : New York Philharmonic/ Westminster Choir 성악/합창 : Mormon Tabernacle Choir 악 기 : vocal 녹음방식 : ADD Stereo 잘생긴 꾀꼬리 꽃미남 리차드강 어리버리 돈키호테.
