The Canadian Brass is a brass quintet founded by Dr. Charles Daellenbach and Gene Watts in 1970. In addition to maintaining a heavy international touring schedule, the Canadian Brass have recorded over 100 CDs and DVDs. They have commissioned, performed, and recorded hundreds of transcriptions and original works for brass quintet. Now in its 5th decade, the group's popularity is only growing as evidenced by quickly reaching 1 million views on its very recently created YouTube Canadian Brass Channel. Description and history The Canadian Brass (known for their unique performance attire of formal black suits with white running shoes) made its American debut at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC in 1975. A significant international visit was made in 1977 when they were sent to mainland China as a cultural exchange between Canada and China. The ensemble was chosen and sent on this cultural mission by then-Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau. They are now remembered in China as the first Western musicians allowed into China after the Cultural Revolution had subverted Western art music. In 1979 Canadian Brass became the first chamber ensemble to solo the main stage at Carnegie Hall. As The New York Times reported, their sold-out performance "clearly establishes the Canadian Brass as a main-stage attraction." In addition to their heavy international touring schedule for over 40 years, and their extensive recording catalog, they have been on the Billboard charts in each decade of their existence, recording with the majors RCA, BMG, CBS, Sony, Philips and Decca, occupying virtually all the spots open to brass players. Canadian Brass recordings are currently released by Toronto-based Opening Day Entertainment Group (ODEG), headed by Daellenbach.

The Canadian Brass ** 단원 ☆ 조 버그스텔러(Joe Burgstaller, 트럼펫) ☆ 제프 넬슨(Jeff Nelsen, 프렌치 혼) ☆ 진 왓츠(Gene Watts, 트럼본) ☆ 처크 델렌바크(Chuck Daellenbach, 튜바) 캐나디언 브라스는 캐나다 토론토를 본거지로 삼는 해밀턴 필하모닉 오케스트라의 수석 금관악기주자들(Chuck Daellenbach, Graeme Page, Bill Phillips, Stuart Laughton)을 중심으로 1970년에 결성됐다. 단원 구성은 트럼펫 2명, 프렌치 혼 1명, 트럼본 1명, 튜바 1명 등 5명이다. 처음엔 그들도 오늘과 같은 결과가 오리라고는 예측하지 못했던 것 같다. 왜냐하면, 창단 무렵만 해도 커다란 의미를 두지 않고 그저 하나의 써클활동을 하겠다는 생각이 멤버들을 지배했다는 것이다. 그러나 시간이 가면서 이들의 매혹적인 연주에 엄청난 반응이 따라오게 되자 생각을 바꾸기 시작했던 것이다. 이들은 창단 이래 바하에서 블루스에 이르는 레퍼토리의 다양성과 놀라운 테크닉, 번뜩이는 재치, 매혹적인 감성, 넘치는 유머 감각을 발휘하면서 세계적인 앙상블로 올라섰고 '브라스 앙상블'의 세계적인 유행을 이끌어냈다. 퍼셀과 비발디, 바하를 비롯해서 다양한 작곡가와 장르에 걸친 이들의 음반은 50종이 넘는다. 그 모든 음반들이 한결같이 브라스 앙상블의 새로운 스탠더드가 되었고 그것은 곧 브라스 앙상블의 새로운 전통으로 굳어졌으니 대단하다. 그 가운데서도 바하의 오르간 대작인 '토카타와 푸가 라단조'의 편곡·연주 음반은 이네들의 트레이드 마크로 여겨질 만큼 폭풍 같은 반응을 불러일으킨 역사적인 명연주·명반이다. 이들은 무대의 규모나 공간적 제한을 두지 않는다. 정규의 콘서트가 열리는 극장은 극장 데로, 별도의 무대가 없는 야외는 야외 데로 기막히게 적응하면서 장소에 걸맞은 레퍼토리로 청중을 즐겁게 만드는 재주를 부린다. 따라서 이들에게 어떤 정형화된 스타일이란 아예 없다. 청중을 위한 헌신과 음악에 대한 집중력만이 이들에게 있을 뿐이다. 사람들은 이들을 '전설적인 5인'이라고 부른다. 이들은 대부분의 시간을 투어에 쓰고 있고 메이저급 오케스트라와 세계 도처에서 연주하고 있다. 지금까지 이들이 수집하고 편곡해서 세계인들에게 들려준 레퍼토리는 무려 200여곡에 달한다. 그 가운데는 정통 클래식을 포함해서 재즈·현대음악·팝송·민요 등 아주 다양한 작품들이 있다. 그 가운데서도 가장 압권을 이루는 작품은 바흐의 '골드베르그 변주곡'의 편곡·연주라는 평가를 받는다. 이들은 다음 세대에 대한 각별한 관심을 갖고 분망한 틈을 내어 마스터 클래스를 열고 있다. 또한 미국의 싼타 바바라 음악원의 초빙교수이기도 하다. 글 출처: 곽근수의 음악이야기
