음반 리뷰
1989년에 발간된 Kings singers의 캐롤집은 (가끔 반주가 동반되는 경우도 있다)크리스마스캐럴 음반으로는 최고의 명반중 하나로 손곱힌다. 유럽 각국의 전통 캐롤과 몇곡의 미국 캐롤을 훌륭히 소화했다.
소프라노 Kiri Te Kanawa와 함께 부른 A little Christmas music은 몇 곡의 캐롤 메들리로 이 앨범의 하일라이트라고 해야겠지만, 무반주로 드럼소리를 흉내내며 부른 The little drummer boy, 마지막 취객의 딸꾹질 소리가 양념역할을 하는 deck the hall 등 킹스 싱어즈 특유의 위트가 돋보이는 곡들이 흥겹고도 격조있는 크리스마스 분위기를 잘 전달해준다.

비틀즈와 함께 영국을 대표하는 아티스트로 손꼽히는 킹스 싱어즈는 캠브리지 대학 킹스 칼리지 출신의 6인조 남성 아카펠라 중창단으로 시작, 교회 합창곡에서 무반주 양식을 일컬었던 “아카펠라”를 새로운 장르로 발전시키고 대중화시킨 선구자적 아티스트로 평가 받고 있다.
클래식을 바탕으로 팝, 포크, 재즈, 민속 음악을 비롯해 펜데레츠키 등 이 시대를 대표하는 유명한 현대 작곡가들이 헌정한 음악까지, 전 장르를 아우르는 레퍼토리는 이들의 공연을 더욱 풍성하게 만든다.
현재까지 발매된 음반이 100장에 이르는 킹스 싱어즈의 방대한 작품 라이브러리는 같은 공연장에서 다시 공연할 경우 같은 프로그램으로 공연하지 않는다는 이들의 의지를 뒷받침해줄 수 있는 소중한 재산이 되고 있다.
