Each year is represented by 22 songs drawn from a wide range of sources, features all very big hits all the time, and plays like an hour of true golden oldies radio. The entry from 1963 collects the sounds of the folk-pop movement (Trini Lopez's "If I Had a Hammer," the Rooftop Singers' "Walk Right In"), the surfers (the Beach Boys' "Surfer Girl"), soul (Freddy Scott's "Hey Girl," Barbara Lewis' "Hello Stranger") and sophisticated pop (Dionne Warwick's "Anyone Who Had a Heart"), and picks up lots of one-off hits like the Caravelles' "You Don't Have to Be a Baby to Cry" and Lenny Welch's positively dreamy "Since I Fell for You." The disc chronicles the last year before the Beatles changed the pop landscape and includes some songs that might not have been as big in a future year, like the Cascades' "Rhythm of the Rain" and Paul & Paula's "Hey Paula."
