Album Title: Bach: The French Suites Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) Performer: Richard Egarr (Harpsichord, Conductor 1963 - Lincoln, England) Audio CD (May 27, 2016) Number of Discs: 2 Format: Audio CD Spars Code: DDD Label: Harmonia Mundi Copyright: (c) ℗ 2016 Harmonia Mundi USA Total Length: 1:45:11 Genres: Classical, Music, Baroque Era Styles: Keyboard Album Review Fresh vitality and a sense of adventure. Noted for his idiosyncratic and probing performances, British keyboard player and conductor Richard Egarr continues his Bach cycle with these captivating readings of the complete French Suites, BWV812-817. "High octane, muscular, a rush of blood to the head ... Moments of calm between the storm ... were suddenly stark, raw and searching. ... I was gripped by the energy of it all, by the urgency of the ornamentation, by the aching crunches in the Allemandes." (HERALD SCOTLAND, concert review) |

Richard Egarr (Biography) In the decade of the 1990s Richard Egarr's career as a harpsichordist quickly developed, and he began to get attention as a conductor. As a boy he was a chorister at York Minster, a position that included complete musical training. He learned piano and organ, studying both at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester from age 13. He earned his diploma in organ playing at 16 and became an organ scholar at Manchester Cathedral, then at Clare College Oxford. The position of organ scholar -- there are generally two at any one time -- is part of the tradition of university chapel choirs in the major British universities. An organ scholar receives a full scholarship to the College and participates in daily services with the College chapel choir throughout the academic year. Egarr began playing harpsichord while at Oxford, and gained his bachelor of music degree in harpsichord in 1986. He pursued studies in that instrument with David Roblou at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and in private studies with Gustav Leonhardt in Amsterdam, the later on a scholarship from the Dutch government. In 1988 he entered the International C.P.E. Bach Fortepiano-Clavichord-Harpsichord Competition in Hamburg, Germany, winning first prize. He began appearing as a harpsichord soloist and in 1991 became the harpsichordist of London Baroque, one of the leading early music ensembles. He held that position until 1995, then became director of the Academy of the Begijnhof, Amsterdam. He appears regularly in leading music festivals in Europe, the U.S., and Japan. He has begun conducting the Hanover Band, appearing with it live on BBC Radio 3 from the 1999 Warwick Festival, and in an all-Bach program at the Dieppe Early Music Festival, also in 1999. EMI Records promoted his developing career by releasing a recording on its Debut series of lower-cost releases by new artists. His recording of the complete keyboard works of Froberger (the first ever) has been received with wide critical praise. Egarr also paired up with violinist Andrew Manze to record Handel's violin sonatas and a disc of Bach harpsichord concertos. He was also named music director of the Academy of Ancient Music for the 2006-2007 season and associate artist with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in 2011.

Richard Egarr Harmonia Mundi Richard Egarr brings a joyful sense of adventure and a keen, enquiring mind to all his music-making, whether conducting, directing from the keyboard or playing concertos (on organ, harpsichord, fortepiano or modern piano), giving solo recitals or playing chamber music.

Music Director of the Academy of Ancient Music since 2006 and a regular guest director with such other ensembles as Handel and Haydn Society and Tafelmusik, he is increasingly sought-after by non-period orchestras ranging from the Scottish, Swedish and Australian chamber orchestras to the Rotterdam Philharmonic, Berlin Konzerthausorchester, and Dallas Symphony Orchestra. He conducts a broad range of repertoire from Monteverdi to Mendelssohn. The Handel and Bach oratorios lie at the heart of his repertoire, and he has a growing reputation in the operatic field – current plans include Mozart’s La finta giardiniera with the Academy of Ancient Music at the Barbican Centre and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, and Rossini with the Netherlands Opera Academy. He made his Glyndebourne debut in 2007 conducting a staged St Matthew Passion. Richard Egarr is in demand across Europe, Japan and the USA for his scintillating solo and concerto performances, and for many years had a close partnership with violinist Andrew Manze. He records exclusively for harmonia mundi USA. His solo output comprises works by Frescobaldi, Gibbons, Couperin, Purcell, Froberger, Mozart, and J. S. Bach (Goldberg Variations and Well-Tempered Clavier). He has an impressive list of award-winning recordings with Andrew Manze, including sonatas by Bach, Biber, Rebel, Pandolfi, Corelli, Handel, Mozart, and Schubert. With the Academy of Ancient Music he has recorded J. S. Bach’s harpsichord concertos and Brandenburg Concertos. In Handel year 2009 they completed a seven-CD series of Handel discs including the instrumental music opp.1, 2 and 5, the Concerti grossi op.3 (which won a Gramophone Award in 2007) and the Organ Concertos op.4 (MIDEM Award and Edison Award 2009) and op.7.Richard Egarr trained as a choirboy at York Minster, at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, and as organ scholar at Clare College Cambridge. His studies with Gustav and Marie Leonhardt further inspired his work in the field of historical performance. |
