영화 ‘자헤드: 그들만의 전쟁’, 총 한방 못쏴본 전쟁용사 | |

〈아메리칸 뷰티〉로 아카데미 작품상과 감독상을 거머쥔 샘 멘디스 감독의 새 영화 〈자헤드: 그들만의 전쟁〉이 국내에서 극장 개봉 없이 지난 18일 디브이디로 출시됐다. 〈자헤드…〉는 1991년 1차 걸프전에 참전한 미국 병사들을 다루고 있어 지금 시점에서 시의성도 있고, 〈브로크백 마운틴〉의 제이크 질런홀, 〈레이〉의 제이미 폭스 등 배우도 화려한데다 지난해 말 미국 개봉 당시 몇몇 언론에선 ‘샘 멘디스 최고의 영화’라는 격찬까지 받았다. 그러나 일반 전쟁영화와는 전혀 다른 이야기 전개 탓에 국내에서 개봉해도 흥행성이 없다는 영화사의 판단 아래 디브이디 시장으로 직행하게 됐다.
가정 형편도 안 좋고, 사회에서 마땅히 할 일을 찾지도 못하던 20살의 앤서니 스워퍼드(제이크 질런홀)는 해병대에 입대한다. 얌전한 성격이지만, 사회에서의 낙오감을 군대에서나마 극복하려는 동기를 가지고 있음이 영화 속 여러 군데에서 읽힌다. 혹독한 훈련을 거치면서 저격수로 발탁되고, 마침내 이라크군과 싸우러 중동으로 출정한다. 그러나 100일이 넘도록 사막 한가운데서 대기한다. 병사들 사이에선 군기 사고가 일어나고, 스워퍼드는 두고 온 애인이 다른 남자를 사귄다는 소식에 분개하고 발작적 광기를 드러내기도 한다. 그러다 마침내 출전 명령이 내려져 포탄이 떨어지는 한가운데까지 진격한다. 하지만 그것도 잠시. 적을 겨냥해 총 한번 제대로 쏘지 못한 채 전쟁이 끝난다. 스워퍼드의 독백. “4일과 4시간 1분, 그게 나의 전쟁이었다.”
이라크전의 명분과 실체가 어긋나는 것처럼, 병사들의 투지도 실체를 만나지 못하고 어긋나 공중분해된다. 전쟁이 끝나기 직전에 스워퍼드는 적군의 경계병을 저격하라는 명령을 받고 정조준하지만, 방아쇠를 당기기 직전에 작전이 변경돼 쏘질 못한다. 스워퍼드의 동료 병사가 상관에게 미친 듯 항의한다. 한발만 쏘게 해 달라고. 이 젊은 병사들의 투지는, 말하자면 그들의 존재 증명인 셈이다. 영화는 그렇게 존재 증명을 할 수밖에 없도록 내몰리고, 그럼에도 존재 증명에 실패하고 마는 젊음들을 클로즈업으로 관찰한다. 미국으로 돌아와 시가행진을 벌이는 해병대원들의 버스에, 전역한 늙은 해병대원 한 명이 올라탄다. 노숙자풍의 이 인물은 환영사를 늘어놓은 뒤, 버스에 좀 태워달라고 한다. 전쟁에 젊음을 바친, 혹은 바치고 있는 이들에 대한 이 영화의 위로는, 〈아메리칸 뷰티〉가 죽어가는 중년의 주인공을 위로하던 방식만큼이나, 아니 그보다 더 쓸쓸하고 차갑다. 소니픽처스 출시.
