"주얼"은 작곡을 시작하면서 성장했고, 미시건의 Interlochen Fine Arts School에 장학생으로 입학하면서 오페라와 드라마, 조각등을 배웠다. 졸업 후 어머니를 찾아 San Diego로 옮긴 그녀는 웨이트레스 등의 잡일로 생계를 유지하면서 뮤지션의 꿈을 키웠는데, Innerchange라는 카페의 싸구려 가수로 활동하면서 수려한 외모와 감성이 풍부한 수정 같은 맑은 목소리가 부각되어 대학시절부터 이어져 온 언더 그라운드 가수 생활은 대학 졸업 후에도 계속되는데 이때 ATLANTIC RECORDS와 계약을 체결한 후 본격적인 음반 발매를 통한 가수 활동을 하게 된다. 1995년 데뷔앨범 [Pieces of You]를 발표하며 본격적으로 등장했다. 이 앨범은 주목을 받지 못했지만, 꾸준한 음반사의 마케팅 전략과 500여회에 걸친 쇼 무대 출연과 프로모션 투어로 부각 되기 시작하면서 1년이 지난후에 주목받기 시작했다. 이 앨범에서 싱글 "Who Will Save Your Soul"은 빌보드 싱글 차트 11위, "You Were Meant for Me"는 2위에 오르게 되었고, 결국 이 데뷔앨범 [Pieces of You]는 전세계 천만장의 음반 판매고를 기록했다. 메이저 데뷔 앨범인 [Pieces Of You]의 수록곡인 'You Were Meant For Me'가 MTV 뮤직 비디오상에서 최우수 여자 아티스트 상 수여, 아메리카 뮤직 어워드 신인상 등 수여. 앨범 [Pieces Of You]는 전세계적으로 일천만장 이상이라는 판매고를 올렸고, 지난 98년에는 자신이 쓴 자작시를 책(Night Without Armor)으로 출간하여 뉴욕타임즈 베스트 셀러 목록에도 오른바 있다. 잘생긴 꾀꼬리 꽃미남 리차드강 어리버리 돈키호테.
