This is very refined music, possibly too refined for the non-specialist. It consists of three pieces. The first, "Gomungo San-Jo," is a 13-minute improvisation for six-string zither and hourglass drum. It has a huge dynamic range and goes from very slow at the outset to fairly fast by the conclusion. It sounds like a very thoughtful blues guitar solo. The second piece, "Ryong San Ho-Sang," is a long (53 minutes) work for the whole eight-piece ensemble (zither, flute, drum, and something that sounds suspiciously like a kazoo). The piece consists of a theme and eight variations, and while it is somewhat static in its melody, the pounding of the drum and the sharp plucking of the zither add real drama. The final piece, "Congsonggok," is a four-minute work for solo flute. The Korean flute sounds somewhat like the typical breathy Japanese flute, except that it can produce high, sharp sounds like a clarinet at the top of its range. This album is interesting, but probably for people with background or training in Korean classical music.

영산회상
가야금과 거문고, 해금, 대금, 피리, 단소,장구가 만들어내는 화음으로 선비들의 음악이라고 합니다.
영산회상은 정악 중에서도 관현악이 잘 어울리는 실내악으로 원래 <영산회상불보살>이란 가사를 가지고 있었으나, 지금은 순수 기악곡으로 전한다고 합니다.
느리고 한가로운 상령산부터 시작하여 점점 빨라지는데, 염불도드리, 타령에 이르면 음악이 고조되어 흥겨운 춤곡으로 이어지고, 군악에서 권마성에 이르면 음악의 절정에 도달한다고 합니다.
정농이란 <바른 음악을 농사짓자>는 취지로 만들어진 연주단체라고 합니다.
1976년 발족한 최초의 정악 연주동호회라고 합니다.

국악 명인들의 '음악 농사' 정농악회
1976년 10월 서울 장충동 국립극장 내 국립국악원. 당시 대학에서 학생들을 가르치던 30대 초반의 젊은 국악인 여섯 명이 원로 사범 성경린(95)옹의 방을 노크했다. 정악(正樂) 전문 연주단체를 만들자는 김정자(64.서울대.가야금)교수의 제안으로 의기투합한 것. 국악원의 인간문화재급 명인들에게 악기를 배우기도 하고 함께 연주도 하자는 취지다. 그 결실이 이듬해 5월 24일 국립극장에서 열린'정악합주의 밤'이다. 최초의 국악 실내악단이 탄생하는 순간이었다.'인간의 심성을 다스리는 바른 음악 농사를 짓자'는 취지로 정농악회(正農樂會)로 이름을 정했다.
"토막 소리만 국악이라고 여기던 시절 1시간 가까이 걸린'영산회상'전곡(全曲)연주는 국악계에 커다란 파장을 몰고 왔어요. 더구나 단잽이(한 악기에 한 명의 연주자)로'영산회상'을 연주하기는 처음이었습니다. 고도의 연주 기량을 요하기 때문이죠."(정재국 회장)
창단 멤버 16명 중 노악사로는 98년까지 초대 회장을 맡았던 김천흥(97.해금)옹만 생존해 있고 김태섭(피리), 김성진(대금), 봉해룡(단소) 등 대부분이 작고했다. 젊은 단원 가운데는 정재국(64.피리.한국예술종합학교), 김선한(63.거문고.이화여대), 강사준(62.해금.서울대) 교수 등만 남았다. 창립 회원 중 양연섭(57.가야금.한양대), 서한범(61.피리.단국대), 조운조(해금.61.이화여대)교수는 1989년 서울악회를 만들었다. 현재 단원은 21명. 대부분 국립국악원 연주단원과 대학 교수들이다.
