"신성한 성가처럼 영혼을 고양시키는 것은 없다. 이러한 음악은 영혼에 날개를 달아 현세 및 육체로부터 해방시키며, 영혼을 사랑의 지혜로 가득 메운다" - 성 요한 크리소스톰 Gregorian Chant 그레고리안 성가 오늘날 가장 중요한 전례음악으로 가톨릭교회에서 존중되는 성가. 로마 교황 그레고리오 1세 (재위 590~604)에서 유래 한다. 성가의 기원은 그리스도교 이전의 유대교 성가에 까지 거슬러 올라가게 되며, 거기에 동방 여러 교회의 성가, 유럽 각 지방의 성가 등이 혼합되어 그레고리오성가의 기초가 이루어졌다. 그것을 통일 · 집대성한 데에는 교황 그레고리오 1세의 공헌이 컸다. 그러나 실제로 그레고리오 성가의 레퍼토리의 대부분이 8세기에서 14세기경 사이에 유럽에서 점차로 형성 되어 간 것으로 생각되며,  동방적 · 지중해적인 요소 보다는 서유럽적인 성격이 강하다. 중세 후기 이후 쇠퇴하여 그레고리오 성가의 올바른 창법 전통도 상실되었으나,   19세기 말 다시 프랑스의 솔렘수도원을 중심으로 성가 부흥운동이 일어나,  오늘날에는 솔렘식(式) 창법이 정통파로 규정되었다. 잘생긴 꾀꼬리 꽃미남 리차드강 어리버리 돈키호테.
