Album Review

The great celebration of the Millennium of Christianity in Rus', which took place in 1988, was marked by the American musical world chiefly by the jubilee concert and this recording, which took place in the National Cathedral in Washington DC. The Music Director of the Cathedral Choral Society, J. Reilly Lewis, contracted with Musica Russica Publishers to select a program that would be representative of the entire 1000 years of Russian church music, and also feature some of its greatest masterpieces. The resulting CD features everything from unison chant to early harmonic part-singing to music by the Italians and their Russian followers, and culminates with Nikolsky's monumental concert "The Lord Reigns" and selections from Rachmaninoff's Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. The two hundred voices singing under the massive arches of the Cathedral produce a rich and glorious sound, although the tempos are of necessity a bit slowed down.
