[바로크 음악의 발견] 오페라의 등장과 함께 시작된 바로크 음악은 웅장하면서도 극적인 음악 양식이 특징으로, 점차 성악에서 기악곡으로, 교회음악에서 세속음악으로 발전해갔다. 독주자의 출현, 대가적 기교와 더불어 소나타, 모음곡, 협주곡 등 새로운 장르가 탄생했으며, 16세기부터 18세기까지 이탈리아를 시작으로 프랑스, 독일, 영국을 거쳐 유럽 전역 최고위층 왕실의 명예를 드높이기도 했다. 특히 가장 위대한 바로크시대의 음악가인 바흐, 헨델, 비발디를 비롯해 알비노니, 파헬벨, 스카를라티, 몬테베르디, 가브리엘리는 마법처럼 매혹적인 음악을 빚어냈다. 바흐는 수난곡을 쓰고 헨델은 오라토리오를 쓴다. 자신이 접하는 환경 곳곳에서 신을 강조한다면 신에 의지하고 신을 대의명분으로 삼는 게 당연하다. 그럼에도 불구하고 끊임없이 과중한 업무에 시달리던 바흐는 <첼로 조곡 2번 아다지오>를 통해 혼자만의 안식을 구하려는 듯하다. 요즘 식으로 말하면 ‘꼰대 같은’ 답답한 사고방식에 지친 바흐는 침잠하기로 한 듯하다. 라이프치히의 고답적인 인사들이 자기를 이류라고 깎아내리든 말든, 나는 작품을 쓰겠다, 갈고닦은 기량을 온전히 쏟아내겠다는 생각 아니었을까. 이렇게 신의 시대에 개인이 등장했다. 작품을 통해 기성 질서에 대해 저항하기도 하고, 자신이 거인의 어깨 위에 있음을 자각하며 전통을 반추하여 창조적으로 계승하는 모습은 시대의 시작과 끝을 가늠하는 기준이라 할 것이다. 몬테베르디는 당대 주류 음악을 거부하고 자신만의 양식으로 새로운 시대를 열었다. 그는 예전 시대의 기준으로 자신의 음악을 삼류 취급하는 비평가를 조롱하기도 했다. 이에 비해 바로크의 마지막 거장으로 등장하는 바흐는 저자의 말대로 ‘유럽에서 성행하던 각기 다른 음악 양식을 흡수하고 완전한 유기체로 통합’하여 당대 음악의 청각적 지도를 후대에 남겨주었다. <디도의 탄식>이라는 애통한 사랑가를 그냥 넘기기는 힘들다. 바로크 변주곡의 대표적인 사례로 자주 언급되는 곡이기도 하지만, 그런 배경을 전혀 모르고 듣더라도 그 슬픔에 금세 동화될 것이다. 그리고 시대를 뛰어넘어 감상자의 마음을 파고드는 예술의 위대함 또한 느낄 수 있을 것이다. 바로크시대라는 낯선 시공간에서도 현재의 우리와 감성적으로 비슷한 이들이 있었다는 사실을 작품을 통해 가슴으로 깨닫게 된다. 그리고 긍정적이든 부정적이든 바로크 작곡가들의 인간적인 면모를 두루 살펴보는 것도 의미있는 일이다. 잘 모른다는 이유로 무심코 넘겼던 작곡가들도 자신의 음악세계를 확립하고 펼쳐나가기 위해 부단히 노력했다는 사실을 확인할 수 있다. 쉬츠 같은 경우 음악이론서의 예시곡 정도에나 나오는 작곡가로 취급했는데, 그가 어떤 인생경로를 밟았는지 알고 나서 접하니 공부할 때도 생생한 기분이 든다. 바흐에 이르는 감상과 공부라는 측면에서도 도움이 될 듯하다. 바흐가 통합해야 할 전통을 확립한 이들은 누구이고, 그들을 계승해나간 이들은 당대의 기준으로 봤을 때 새로운 시도를 어떻게 더했는지 알 수 있다. 글 출처: 김형수 |
